TEA Tuesday: Encounters in the Electrum Sea

Hey folks,

Last week I had to spend some time caring for my partner who tested positive, but this week I'm back and working hard to get this ready for you all.

What I would like to share today is the revamp of the Electrum Sea spread that was included in the preview PDF.

While working on the regions I quickly realized that a 2-page spread per region wasn't going to cut it. I really want this first zine to be a flavorful foundation on which people can build their own adventures. The main way I try to do that is by providing some major locations, a table of hooks, and a table of encounters for each region. This, combined with the descriptions of factions and creatures found elsewhere in the zine, should be enough to get you all started exploring Orn while I'm working on the next zines.

So to make sure that Seers and their players would have enough bits of Orn to fill in the gaps in the meantime,  I've decided to expand each region's section to 4 pages. One spread with a general overview and some locations, and a second spread containing a bunch of tables. This gives me more room for larger tables and some more art.

I'll show what I mean using the two spreads for the Electrum Sea region. Just keep in mind that these are still very rough and haven't undergone any copy editing yet.

You can see that the tables of the original spread have been removed and there is more breathing room around the location paragraphs. Because of this, I had the opportunity to add some more art.

Now that the tables have their own spread, the font can be the same size it is throughout the rest of the zine and can have a little more space around it in the table cells. This extra room also gave me the space to double the size of the encounters table and add two more little tables that might help when making stuff up on the fly during a game.

The complication table just provides some loose encounter complication ideas for the Seer to interpret when they have to come up with a complication when rolling a 1 on the Travel Roll (as seen in the last post).

The local factions table is used when randomly generating NPCs using the tables later in the zine. In that section, a loyalty table might indicate that the NPC isn't loyal to one of the major factions but instead to a local faction determined by the region the player characters are in.

In the next few days, I hope to finish writing these sections for each of the other regions so I can share more about them in the next TEA Tuesday :)

Cheers!

Emiel
